1. Identify a problem in the community
Despite all the LGBTIQ+ awareness campaigns and employment legislations which have been implemented
in South Africa, many gay individuals face immense and disturbing challenges on a daily basis. Challenges
such as being excluded from employment programs and incentives to being discriminated and rejected by
family members and friends, while others have simple been denied access to service delivery from their
communities due to their sexuality.
2. Describe a possible solution
While South Africa does have one of the most liberal constitutions globally, there is still much room for
improvement. As part of the solution, South African department of education needs to be more robust and
advanced in their educational efforts regarding LGBTIQ+ awareness, especially in impoverish disadvantage
communities and schools. The value of an educational environment is imperative as its ethos teaches
respect, empathy, kindness and tolerance. Education “helps people become better citizens, get a better-
paid job, and shows the difference between good and bad. Education shows us the importance of hard
work and, at the same time, helps us grow and develop. Thus, we are able to shape a better society to live
in by knowing and respecting rights, laws, and regulations”. (Habitat for Humanity, 2022)
Another solution is of the idea of the expression that numbers speaks volumes, “make your presence
known”. There is a much needed active role from the LGBTIQ+ within communities. An example such as an
LGBTIQ+ member running for a mayoral position for their district. In an article by Rivona Pillay (2018), she
advocates that there should be more gay people represented in leadership positions, not just in LGBTQ+
issues, but in all social issues affecting the country.
3. Consider how diversity affects possible solutions
When dealing with diversity, a very critical approach is needed to make psychological changes in a
community. A community may consist of individuals with differences in factors (such as age, religion,
culture, gender and social upbringing) which are all relatively important and should be taken into account
when implementing possible solutions mentioned above. According to Tervalon & Murray-Garcia (1998),
without a basic understanding of the beliefs and experiences of individuals, one can accidentally contribute
to prejudice and discrimination or negatively impact professional relationships and effectiveness of

, services. An example of such is if an educational awareness program about LGBTIQ+ is broadcasted in an
impoverish community. One would have to consider that there might be individuals within the community
whose faith dictates and strongly rebukes homosexually. Hence this particular solution may not be
successfully implemented and possibly create uproar amongst community members. In black cultural
communities, homosexuality is not tolerated nor accepted. Most homosexual individuals live in fear for
their lives and met with violence. Therefore as one of my solutions of that there needs to be an increase in
gay people being represented in leadership positions; this will definitely not be a possibility in such a
community. A perfect case would be of Simon Nkoli, a black gay political activist. During 1980’s in Soweto (a
black township), Simon Nkoli had to establish the “Saturday Group” to try to accommodate gay black men.
Simon Nkoli explained that it “was very much concerned about mostly the black gays who don't come out
of the closet.” His efforts were confronted with ferocity and rebuked from both his community and
politician affiliations.

In conclusion, steps taken to improve the solutions listed in section 2 and taking diversity into
consideration, one would need to gain an understanding of the diversity within communities. It would be
beneficial to identify and articulate the dynamics related to culture and power differentials with the
communities. Due to the complexity of these dynamics, respecting diversity would require the formation of
relationships with various members of a community who may be able to serve as a guide for working with
the community in culturally valid ways. (Jason, Glantsman, O'Brien, & Ramian, p. 162). A collaborative and
ecological systems approaches would need to be adopted when working within that particular community.
