, Tanzania’s background
Was called German East Africa:
- Zanzibar became a British protectorate
- In WW1 British took over GEA = Tanganyika
- Julius Nyerere = Tanganyika African National Union
o Fighting for independence
o Zanzibar = independence in 1963
o Tanganyika = independence
Both became Republic of Tanzania
- TANU = forge African socialism + unity with ethnic groups
- Julius Nyerere = president in 1962
Julius Nyerere’s vision
Intended on an egalitarian society:
- Anti development of an elite society
o Social and equal rights for all
- Vision was idealistic
o ≠ divided by tribe, race or class = common national identity

o Promoting + developing Tanzanian economy
o National control of economic development
o Common purpose = unite people under TANU
o Fair society ≠ income inequalities

Nyerere’s policy of African Socialism = drawing up Arusha Declaration:
- New leadership code
o Leaders ≠ make extra money (renting houses, businesses etc.)

- Socialism + democracy go together
- Banks nationalized
