Explain how health, safety and hygiene legislation has
impacted on food retailers
Health, safety and hygiene legislations impact food retailers such as Tesco an example of this is the
“no- one should be hurt working or shopping for Tesco” (Unknown author, Tesco PLC 2018) This
enforces that all customers priorities safety of people first with the workplace, this is due to facing
legal obligation such as the health and safety at work act meaning they must keep safety standards
at their very best.

Tesco ensure they meet health and safety by proving fire safety to people within each department,
this is due to the legislation of Health and Safety (First Aid) regulation 1981 to ensure employer
know how to provide first aid as well as know how to handle there department in case of a fire, such
as by telling employees the fire exits to ensure safety.

Tesco has introduced training for new employers who are working with departments such as
hygiene to show them how to handle a knife and what equipment to wear to decrease risk of
injuries. As well as this notice boards have been put up around the superstore (Tesco) by giving
health and safety tips such as where the fire exit is, instructions on what board to use when
chopping different types of foods within the kitchen.

Hygiene legations impact Tesco within the kitchen an example of this is the Food Safety (General
Food Hygiene) Regulations 2005 this means Tesco must ensure they are checking their food before
giving it out to customers, Tesco do this by having a stage called quality control which they use to
check food is edible, on top of this Tesco sample food to see if it edible and can be sold to
customers.

Another food retailer (Waitrose) uses legislations, an example of this is Health and Safety at Work
Act, Waitrose uses this legation by making all employees wear shoes with flat soles and covering
toes (Unknown author, Waitrose 2018) allowing them to protect themselves in case of any objects
falling on their toes, as well as this by wearing flat sole it allow employees to not fall over easily and
always be stable when walking.

Another health and safety regulation that Waitrose obliges by is Workplace Health, Safety and
Welfare Regulations 1992, this act ensures Waitrose keep the workplace in their best condition. This
impacts Waitrose as they must meet essential requires, Waitrose do this by having a cleaner , clean
every day ensure the work place is tidy and no health hazards are present. Another example of this
can be meeting the requirements for lighting and ventilation as Waitrose must ensure that lights
within the shop are all function well and not too bright to damage customer’s eyesight, by Waitrose
meeting these requirements they will ensure a safe environment, but they would ensure a pleasant
experience.

Control of substances hazardous to health (2002) helps protect employees and employers in the
workplace from hazardous substances. This has a massive impact on the retailers Tesco and ASDA as
they must ensure they prevent or minimize employees exposure to hazardous substances, Both
origination do this by giving the correct equipment when needed such as giving gloves when
cleaning worktop with hazardous chemical, this requires Tesco to give suitable training and rules for
the employees to reduce exposure to the chemicals, ASDA and Tesco also require chemical
substances to be store in certain places to ensure they do not contaminated the food as they could
poison the consumers.
