● Roger Williams preached separation from Church of England-Providence Plantations- Became Rhode
Island-
● Anne Hutchison- Criticized male dominated authority, women attracted to progressive ideas of
religious tolerance, banished for blasphemy.
● Thomas Hooker- Believed all white Christians had a right to vote regardless of church affiliation, or
property qualifications. Moved to Connecticut. Drafted first constitution, representative form of
government, and Bill of Rights.
● George Calvert, established Catholic colony of Maryland, William Penn-Pennsylvania, holy
experiment-attracted other persecuted Europeans, ethnic and religious diversity
● Royal Colonies- Operated by grants of king-colonial profits go to him.
● Proprietary Colonies- grants from the King-conduct business with corporations and Kings.
● All but two colonies had three branches of government.- Governor, Assembly by people, and council
appointed by governor.
