Notes on communications and technologies class
(Unit 1-3)

Hardware External: physical parts of the computer, the actual parts and
components that make up the body of your computer

External hardware, internal hardware (location of the hardware)
External hardware: the parts that people are most familiar with

Some external hardware parts are : computer case monitors, keyboard, mice, speaker, printers.

Most of these parts are optional meaning that they are not required.

These optional components are sometimes called peripherals.

Hardware Internal: Internal hardwares refers to the parts of your computer
that goes INSIDE of the case.

Some essential internal hardware are : The motherboard, the cpu, ram, the hard drive, the
power supply unit, the graphic card.

These parts listed above are a MUST for your computer to run flawlessly.

The motherboard: The motherboard is like a nervous system meaning it connects to all the
other components allowing them to communicate.

But depending on the different connectors on the motherboard, it determines the parts you will
need

The central processing unit (CPU): The CPU is kind of like a brain, meaning it
performs all the calculations and sends instructions and requests through the motherboard and
other components.

The cpu comes in different “chip sets” they are designed differently based on who makes them.

,(ON TEST: THE CPU TENDS TO HEAT UP WHICH IS WHY IT NEEDS TO BE PLACED
UNDER A HEAT SINK)

The random access memory (RAM): The RAM is sometimes called your computer's
“working memory”

The RAM is like a computer's “short term memory” which stores all the information and the
computer is working with that at the moment

The data in RAM is called “volatile” which is only stored as long as the computer has power.

IT IS IMPORTANT that your motherboard is compatible with your RAM.

The hard drive: There are 2 types of hard drives: the hard disk drives
(HDDs) and a solid state drives (SSDs)
The hard drive is like the computers “long term memory” to store information for a long periods
of time

Most drives will work for any motherboard so you don't need to worry about compatibility

Some hard drives are designed with CERTAIN computer types for example: Laptops vs Desktops

NVMe (Nonvolatile memory express) hard drives: The NVMe, sometimes known
as the “M. 2” hard drives are a more recent form of SSD

They are usually faster than the standard SSDs, but require “Special connectors” on the
motherboard and are MUCH more expensive.

Not on the test!!!

What is hardware??

Physical parts which can be external and internal

, What is the difference between memory and Hard drive??

:Pros and cons

Hard drives:

- Have a very LARGE storage space
- Are fairly expensive
- Keep their data when they lose power
- Are slow to access or change their data

RAM:

- Has a comparatively small storage space
- Is MUCH more expensive
- Loses the darta when it does not have power
- It is fast when you try to access or change the data

Hence, why we use RAM for things we do right now BUT use Hard Drives if we want to keep
data long term.

Read only memory (ROM)

- Permanent storage
- Is nonvolatile
- Designed by the manufacturer and cannot be modified or erased by the user
- Contributed to static functions, such as booting the device or providing instructions to run
other devices such as a printer.
