AUTHOR - Erich Maria Remarque
- German writer, wanted to become a musician and painter
- in 1916 (he was 18 years old) he volunteered for the First World War on the Z front,
was seriously wounded there (he spent the rest of the war in an infirmary)
- on his return, he had trouble fitting back into society
- he also worked as an editor - travelled extensively in Europe
- moved to Switzerland
- got on the list of banned authors (after the rise of Nazism), was stripped of his German
citizenship
- then went to New York, where he became an American citizen
- never returned to his homeland - didn't identify with what they had done (ashamed of
what they were capable of)

into a film (one year later, then in the 70s)
