L8 - minority influence :

This refers to a form of social influence where minority of people persuade other to adopt
their beliefs , attitude and behaviour = internalisation / conversion where private attitudes
as well as public are changed

Consistency :

If a minority consistent with their view , increases the amount of interest from other people -
cause people to rethink their own views

Synchronic consistency - people in minority are all saying the same thing
Diachronic consistency - people in minority have been saying the same thing for over a long
period of time

Commitment:

- minority engages in extreme activities to draw attention to their cause - it’s important for the
activities to be of some risk to the minority e.g. getting arrested because it demonstrates the
commitment / dedication to their cause
- This increases interest from groups in the majority - makes them pay attention

Augmentation principle - when minority carry out behaviour which put them all at risk in order
to demonstrate commitment - makes majority pay attention

Flexibility:

Minority shows willingness to listen to others - balance consistency with flexibility so not rigid in
thoughts (compromise)

Minorities who are flexible - meet majority halfway are more influential than those fixed in their
own views

Researcher questioned whether consistency alone is enough to cause minority influence

● Nemeth = if the minority are seen as inflexible and uncompromising then the majority is
unlikely to change
● She constructed a mock jury in which there were 3 genuine ppt and one confederate
● They had to decide on amount of compensation to give a ski lift accident victim
● When the confederate did not change from a lone amount = unreasonable the majority
stuck together on a higher amount
● But when the confederate comprised and changes his compensation a little so did the
majority
● Shows the minority should balance consistency and flexibility so they don't appear rigid
