YEAR 10 GCSE HISTORY - CONFLICT AND TENSION, THE INTERWAR YEARS 1918 - 1939

ASSESSMENT NO. 3 - THE ORIGINS & OUTBREAK OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR

Source A for use in answering Question 1.
Source A: A cartoon published in Britain in 1936 called ‘The Goose Step’; this was the name for a
type of march that Nazi troops used at parades. ‘Pax Germanica’ means ‘German peace’.

Question 01

Study Source A.

Source A criticises Hitler’s remilitarisation of the Rhineland. How do you know? Explain your answer
using Source A and your contextual knowledge. [ 4 marks ]#

Source A criticizes Hitler’s remilitarisation of
the Rhineland firstly due to the ‘Pax
Germanica’ tag and olive tree branch in the
Goose (representing Germany)’s beak. ‘Pax
Germanica’ means German Peace and the
olive branch is also typically a symbol of
peace. These icons of peace are juxtaposed
by wide array of weapons the goose carries,
which connote fighting and war. This sharp
contrast between symbols paints Germany to
be duplicitous for pudding up a façade of
peace while they are remilitarising the
Rhineland. Also, the Goose is also seen to be
stepping over a torn ‘Locarno’, representing
the Locarno Treaty signed by Germany in
1925. I this treaty, Germany essentially
agreed to accept the rules of Treaty of
Versailles. In the Treaty of Versailles, Germany
had to remilitarise the Rhineland, so trying to
re-militarise it is a direct betrayal of trust and
make the Locarno treaty seem pointless.
