Learning unit 2 focuses on your role as a teacher-facilitator in supporting the development of learners’
well-being and to support the holistic development of learners. In addition, the following topics are
addressed:

• The characteristics of a good teacher-facilitator

• Basic counselling skills for teachers, and,

• The ethical boundaries that teacher-facilitators need to be aware of.

AS OUTLINED BY POLICIES AND GUIDELINES

This learning unit looks at the following learning support documents and strategies that were
developed by the Department of Education to guide teachers when providing additional learning
support to their learners:

• The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS)

• The Screening, Identification and Assessment Screening (SIAS) document

• The Individual Education Plan (IEP)

Furthermore, we provide a discussion on the Reading, Written language and Mathematics support
strategies that can be utilised within the classroom.
