Unit 8- Assignment 2-Understanding the impact of war, conflict and terrorism
Assignment 2
Different Terrorist Organisations
There have been many terrorist groups over the years some are still active however some have lost a
lot of power due to loss of life in fighting. There are two types of terrorist groups, National and
Regional terrorist groups who strike only in their nation which include the IRA,ETA, and Hamas. The
other type of terrorist group is global terrorists which strike fear and dangerous across the world and
these include groups like the Taliban, ISIS and Al Qaeda.
National and Regional Terrorist Groups
IRA(Irish Republican Army)
The IRA is an acronym of the Irish Republican Army who wanted to Northern Ireland to be a part of
Ireland itself instead of being a part of the UK however they weren’t successful of making this
happen because the Irish republic were mainly catholic but the Northern Irish were protestant so
the IRA started to try and use force to make this happen. The IRA split into two parties, the Provos
and Official in which the Violent attacks occurred. The first Attacks of the IRA started with the Provos
in the 1970s which they carried out bombings, assassinations and bombings. The IRA then moved
their attacks to Britain and ended up killing 1800 people with 600 of them being civilians. One of the
more serious bombings that the IRA did was in 1993 a Brighton Hotel bombing where the IRA tried
to assassinate Margret Thatcher but instead killed 5 people.
Hamas
The Hamas terrorists are part of a group under the Islamic law which carry out attacks against Israel
to gain power through elections. This Terrorist group is based around the West Bank and Gaza strip.
This conflict between the Palestine’s and Israel’s is all about who’s land is who’s however over the
years palatines land has decreased significantly therefore the Hamas terrorist group have started to
attack the Israel’s. In 1996 there were several suicide bus bombings killing 60 Israel’s this was
revenge for the killing of the Hamas Bomb maker Yahya Ayyash. Hamas method is to fire rockets into
Israel. This conflict is still going on till this day.
ETA(Euskadi Ta Askatasuna)
ETA is an armed organisation that want to use conflict to get independence for regions in northern
Spain and southern France. The ETA have killed over 800 people over the past 40 years however
they have declared ceasefires twice but the organisation is still on going. In 2004 the ETAs most
deadly attack occurred which they bombed a train in Madrid killing 191 people and injuring more
than 1,800. This was Spain most deadly terrorist attack.
Global Terrorists
ISIS
ISIS is a relatively new terrorist organization which is also known as the Islamic state. They believe in
the sharia law and anyone who doesn’t believe in it should be killed. They have performed 90 attacks
in 21 countries and killed nearly 1400 people. One of their most brutal attack was the one in Paris
which they shot a series of people and killed 137 people.
