Definitions of War and Conflict
Unarmed Hostility
A heated disagreement between 2 or more countries towards an idea, plan or threat. It is non-
violent way of expressing hostile views. An example of this in the real world would be South Korea
sending missiles over China for testing as China and America are very angry with this threat.
Activate Military Operations
When Military Personnel are deployed either in combat or peace keeping. An Example of Military
Operations is the Afghanistan war where the British military were sent into IRAQ to fight the Iraqi
government which was led by Saddam Hussein however the government was protected by Al-
Qaeda. This was called the Second Gulf War.
Battles
Where two or more forces engage in a battle with one and other, these battles are usually very
violent and have a lot of casualties. An example of a battle is the Falklands War where Argentina
invaded the Falkland Islands which was part of the UK colony therefore the British had to engage in
battle as the Argentines invaded a UK colony in the South Atlantic. 655 Argentines and 255 British
lost their lives in this battle.
Conflict carried on by force of arms
This is where 2 nations or more nations have a full conflict through air land and sea. An example of
this is when Egypt deployed their troops along their border and then close Israel’s shipping lanes.
Israel then decided to attack Egypt without warning and put most of Egypt’s air force grounded.
Israel also sent their ground troops into Egypt and capturing the Gaza Strip.
Causes of War
Political
Politics is a cause of war and conflict. Politics is how a country is run and is usually a debate on which
parties have power to run this country or area. There are two types of politics international politics
and internal politics. International politics is usually a disagreement over different territories. For
example during World War 2, The United States and Soviet Union fought together as allies however
when the war ended the connection between the two countries was tense as the US didn’t not like
the way Russia wanted to become a communist country and they believed that Stalin would lead
Russia to take control of the world. During this cold war the US and Soviet Union went back and
forth with several threats about missiles and bombs as President Truman announced that the united
states were to build a hydrogen bomb in response to this the soviets then began to make an atomic
bomb.
Nationalism
When you’re part of a country or organization you often feel strongly about how you want the
country to be run however this can cause conflict if the leader has a different belief or idea than the
current population. An example of nationalism is the conflict with Northern Ireland and Ireland as
Northern Ireland wanted to be part of the United Kingdom however the Republic of Ireland was not
