• Nucleus This controls all the
cellular activities using coded instructions in DNA. These coded instructions enable the cell
to make specific proteins. RNA is produced in the nucleus and leaves via the nuclear pores.
The nucleus stores, replicates and decodes DNA.
• Cytoplasm Each organelle in a cell is suspended in a semi-liquid medium, the cytoplasm.
Many ions are dissolved in it. It is the site of many chemical reactions.
• Lysosomes There are specialised vesicles because they contain digestive enzymes. The
enzymes have the ability to break down proteins and lipids. If the enzymes were free to react
in the cytoplasm, then the cell destruction would result.
• Cell plasma This covers the outside of a cell and consists of a double layered sheet of
phospholipid molecules interspersed with proteins. It separates the cell from the outside
environment, gives physical protection and allows the import and export of selected
chemicals.
• Ribosomes There are numerous ribosomes in a cell, located along rough endoplasmic
reticulum. They help the manufacture of proteins being the site where mRNA meets tRNA
