• Peripheral IV complications –
1. Infiltration - The area is swollen, tender, and cool to touch.
2. Extravasation - The patient experiences pain at the insertion site, tender, cool to touch.
PRN 1725 FOCUSED REVIEW STUDY GUIDE 2024-2025 UPDATE-RASMUSSEN
, Extravasation is infiltration of drugs that can damage the tissues and cause necrosis and
sloughing of tissues.
3. Phlebitis - Vein becomes hardened, swollen, and tender to touch.
4. IV site infection - Site is hot, red, and painful. There may be purulent type drainage noted
around insertion site.
For all complications, the LPN should collaborate with the RN for next step interventions. For infiltration,
phlebitis, and IV site infection, the IV catheter will need to be removed and re-started at a new site. To
treat extravasation of a drug, it will require the intervention of the registered nurse and pharmacist.
