Assess the impact of Nazi racial policies in the years from 1933 to 1939.
Nazi racial policies were always extreme, they believed in a racially pure state
and had firm beliefs in the idea that German blood was superior. The main
impact was the loss of rights and freedom for Jewish people however the nazi
racial policy also was impactful in gaining public support and persecuting other
minority groups.
The Nazi’s were always open about their racial policies especially towards Jews
who undoubtedly suffered the most during this time. In the early years between
1933-37 Jews had lost their freedom and rights. They lost their freedom to work
through laws such as 1933 civil service laws and the freedom to live in Germany
without fear. The Nuremburg laws of 1935 meant that Jews lost their German
citizenship which resulted in the mass emigration and relocation of Jews from
Germany. The Nazi’s were thrilled upon the idea of a Germany without Jews and
drove them out further through initiatives such as boycotting Jews shops on the
1st April. However, this wasn’t too popular with the public and ended within a day.
Nonetheless the exclusion of Jews encouraged more and more of the population
to emigrate. By 1938 Nazi racial policies had become extreme and the
inconsistent policies were getting more radical especially after Kristallnacht
which saw the destruction of homes and Jews being ordered to pay 1 billion
Reichsmark. This showed the desperate attempts of the Nazi’s to drive away
Jews which were successful as forced emigration led to ½ of the Jews leaving
before war had begun. Terror and violence grew and Nazis began to take racial
policies even further, in Poland Jews were taken to Ghetto’s and 20,000 jews
were initially sent to concentration camps where they were aware that hard
labour and poor conditions would eventually result in death however didn’t
escalate their racial policy to mass murder yet. Therefore, it is clear that the
most important impact of the Nazi’s racial policies were the loss of freedom and
rights of the Jews who were essentially bullied into leaving the country gradually
through sacking of jobs to eventually being fully controlled through policies such
as not being able to leave the house and no radio.
A less detrimental impact of the Nazi racial policy was the impact of society. The
Nazi’s thought that untermenschen (sub-mixing) was damaging to society
therefore there was increased segregation between the Aryan and non-Aryan
race. They went to different schools and strict rules and regulations of marriage
and sexual relations between the two races. This led to further divisions within
society however it is also fair to state that these divisions were less to do with
Nazi racial policies and were already existing divisions between them. Jews were
always excluded from society and thought to be greedy due to being able to loan
out money and making profits of the white Germans. However, the Nazi race
policies exacerbated these divisions and successfully created a split society in
which antisemitic beliefs played a key role.
Another impact of Nazi racial policies was the ability to win support amongst the
population and the army. The Nazi’s played upon existing antisemitic beliefs to
render party support, the racial policies were a sign to the members of the SS,
SA and the army that Nazi ideology fit their beliefs. Through Gobbel’s
propaganda the Nazi’s promoted this idea of “race science” which taught that
non- Aryan race were biologically inferior and a “pure” state can only be
achieved through the eradication of the Jews. Furthermore these racial policies
