The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of age on lung performance such as:
One of the main objectives is to thoroughly evaluate how lung function varies as people
age. The projects’ objective is to recognise and record particular patterns or trends in
the aging-related loss in lung function. Assessing how a person's lung function changes
with age is the goal of an experiment on the impact of peak flow measurements on lung
performance. Peak flow is a useful metric for assessing lung health since it quantifies the
fastest possible air exhalation rate. Peak flow is usually measured in participants of
various ages, and the results are analysed to see whether lung function significantly
varies with age. This can be helpful in identifying and treating respiratory disorders as
well as helping researchers and medical practitioners better understand how lung
function varies as people age.
PROCEDURE:
To carry out a peak flow test to assess the effect of age on lung performance, these are
the procedures we will undertake. We would need to gather equipment; to carry out the
experiment we would need the correct equipment which will be the handheld peak flow
meter.
We would then select participants: choose participants from different age groups. In
order to get valid data, I would need participants with different ages.
To make sure that we have a safe experiment we would inform the participant and ask
them if we would be able to use their results as data to analyse and compare with
others. I shall then talk the participant through the procedure and clearly explain any
hazards and risks.
Baseline measurements are when I collect baseline information from the participant,
such as their age, height, weight, and any pertinent medical history prior to doing peak
flow measurements.
Instructions: Explain the test to participants. They will need to take a deep breath and
then blow forcefully into the peak flow meter.
Measurement: Have participants perform the test multiple times to get an average peak
flow measurement. Ensure they use maximal effort during each attempt.
Recording Data: Record the peak flow measurements for each participant, along with
their age.
Data Analysis: Use statistical analysis to compare the peak flow measurements across
different age groups. Look for trends or significant differences in lung performance with
age.
Interpretation: Interpret the results and draw conclusions regarding the effect of age on
lung performance based on the data collected.
Reporting: Prepare a report or presentation summarizing your findings, including any
observed correlations or trends.
Ethical Considerations: Ensure the ethical treatment of participants and maintain their
privacy and confidentiality throughout the experiment.
In order to get valid results, it is key to make sure we carry out the experiment
accurately, this is so that when we collect our data when we statistically compare, we
have clear understanding and are aware of the underlying data. It is essential to have an
experienced investigator or invigilator monitoring through the experiment.
