College 8 - Risk behavior
Changing risk behaviors and addiction.
- How can we change behaviors?
- How can we stimulate behavior change in others?
How to measure ‘stages of change’?
To what extent do you intend to quit smoking? 1. “Within 10 days” … 9. “I do not intend to
ever quit smoking or smoke less.”
- Precontemplation: No intention to quit within 6 months
- Contemplation: Intention to quit, but not within 1 month
- Preparation: Intention to quit within 1 month
- Action: Quitted
, Transtheoretical model: processes of change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1986)
The 10 processes/strategies of change stimulate the progress through the stages of
change:
- 5 cognitive processes, mainly aimed at increasing motivation to change:
- Raising awareness about the negative consequences of the risk behavior.
- Reevaluation of one’s self-image with and without the risk behavior.
- 5 behavioral processes, mainly aimed at increasing self-efficacy :
- Avoiding cues that trigger the risk behavior.
- Finding alternative behavior that replaces the risk behavior.
This model is widely used, yet the transtheoretical model received a large amount of
criticism:
- ‘Processes of change’ are quite non-theoretical.
- Individuals do not systematically move from one stage to the next.
- Behavior change is often not previously planned!
- ‘Stages of change’ is an unstable construct:
- The motivation to change behavior can fluctuate heavily (even in one day)
Stages of change are sensitive to accidental fluctuations, even in the
‘landscape’ of 1 day, especially for young people.
