The 10 processes/strategies of change stimulate the progress through the stages of
change:
- 5 cognitive processes, mainly aimed at increasing motivation to change:
- Raising awareness about the negative consequences of the risk behavior.
- Reevaluation of one’s self-image with and without the risk behavior.
- 5 behavioral processes, mainly aimed at increasing self-efficacy :
- Avoiding cues that trigger the risk behavior.
- Finding alternative behavior that replaces the risk behavior.

This model is widely used, yet the transtheoretical model received a large amount of
criticism:
- ‘Processes of change’ are quite non-theoretical.
- Individuals do not systematically move from one stage to the next.
- Behavior change is often not previously planned!
- ‘Stages of change’ is an unstable construct:
- The motivation to change behavior can fluctuate heavily (even in one day)
