Explain how ascending I is to high altitudes affects resting metabolic rate (RMR).
When Ascending to higher altitudes our bodies have to acclimate to the lower levels of oxygen. Since
there is less oxygen in the air our bodies have to expend more energy in order to gain more oxygen.
This affects our resting metabolic rate by making it increase our heartbeat in order to get more oxygen throughout.

Compare and contrast a 2 direct calorimetry with indirect calorimetry, including how energy (calories) can be
measured with each.
Direct calorimetry determines the energy content of food or energy expenditure by measuring changes in
thermal/ heat energy. Indirect calorimetry measures changes in oxygen consumption and/or carbon dioxide
production. These two are similar in that they both measure how many calories are burned. The difference is that
one measures heat production while the other measures oxygen consumption.
The three energy systems that replenish ATP are creatine phosphate, anaerobic glycolysis, and oxidative
phosphorylation.
TRUE/FALSE

As stored energy is released to perform some type of work, it is referred to as
- potential energy
- electrical work
- force production
- kinetic energy

What term refers to the amount of energy per unit time required by the body to maintain a non-active but alert
state?
- BMR
- resting oxygen consumption
- TEE
- RMR

The size and complexity of which device makes them unsuitable for measuring energy expenditure for short time
intervals, particularly less than 30 minutes?
- room-size calorimeters
- metabolic cart
- simplified portable system
- doubly labeled water (DLW)

Which factor increases resting metabolic rate by an estimated 15-25 percent?
- cigarette smoking
- caffeine
- environmental temperature
- ascending to high altitudes

The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy is_
- neither created nor destroyed
- created but not destroyed
- destroyed but not created
- both created and destroyed
