Dios.Descartes plantea la cuestión de si podemos demostrar la
existencia de algo más allá de nuestra mente, sosteniendo que las
ideas innatas, como la de Dios, poseen un grado de realidad
objetiva que corresponde a algo externo. A través de tres
argumentos, Descartes afirma la existencia de Dios: primero,
basado en que la causa de una idea con cierto grado de realidad
objetiva debe ser igual o superior a ella; segundo, argumentando
que como ser contingente e imperfecto, solo un ser perfecto como
Dios podría haber dado origen a nuestra existencia; y tercero,
siguiendo una variante del argumento ontológico de San Anselmo,
que sostiene que la esencia de un ser perfectísimo implica su
existencia.
Una vez establecida la existencia de Dios, Descartes cree posible
demostrar la existencia del mundo material, ya que un ser bueno
como Dios no permitiría que las criaturas percibieran algo con
claridad y distinción si no fuera verdadero. Por lo tanto, al percibir
con claridad y distinción las propiedades matematizables de la
realidad, Descartes concluye que la realidad material existe en sus
propiedades matematizables, es decir, en forma de res extensa.
