MACBETH:CONTEXT:
- Divine Right: The idea that the King was appointed by God, and
that there would be consequences if it was interfered with
- The Chain Of Being/Natural Order: A casting system which
started with God and angels at the top and goes down to the
king, animals and plants. The Jacobean audience believed that if
this was forcefully altered, it would result in consequences,
- Religion: The Jacobean audience believed all life was sacred to
God
- Gender/Patriarchy: Women were viewed as physically and
mentally weaker than men and were subservient to them -
women who went against this stereotype were usually suspected
as witches
- Witchcraft: King James was obsessed with witchcraft and set up
many witch hunts (Daemonologies)- Shakespeare's use of witches
would interest the King and invoke fear amongst the Jacobean
audience
- The Gunpowder Plot: King James was victim to this plot and
feared future regicides- Macbeth acts as a deterrent to this and
shows that those who commit regicide are mentally tortured
