‘Religion was significantly transformed in the years 1559-85’
Assess the validity of this view. 25 marks.
Elizabeth had inherited a kingdom of religious instability and
would therefore be facing many problems that came from her
predecessors and the religious divisions. Elizabeth had to be
more stricter with her policies due to many religious opposition
from the religious settlement and therefore Elizabeth had to
maintain law and order by being more strict and persistent with
how she dealt with the religious changes. Elizabeth would
therefore start to transform the religious landscape in England
and start to solve some religious issues.
At the start of Elizabeth’s reign she created the religious
settlement and many Catholics and Protestants were broadly
supportive of the reform and many others were comprehensive.
The act of uniformity of 1559 required all English subjects to
attend Anglican church services and imposed penalties on
those who refused. The Act of Supremacy of 1559 declared
Elizabeth I the supreme Governor of the church of England,
and it required all clergy to swear an oath of allegiance to her.
This was significant as she changed the structural hierarchy of
the church as the Catholics believed that the Pope in Rome
was above the priests therefore Elizabeth abolished Papal
supremacy and the act was easily passed since the change in
title appeased many protestants and those who did not think a
woman should lead the Church. This still caused problems with
the Catholics as they were uneasy about Elizabeth’s title as
supreme governor and later on Elizabeth’s protestant ruling
would lead to calls for Mary queen of England instead because
she was catholic and would lead to further uprisings.
