De biologische functie van serumeiwitten zijn veelvuldig :
- Bepalen en onderhouden van de osmotische druk
- Transportfunctie
- Rol bij zuur/base evenwicht
- Rol als bioactieve stof (enzymen, hormonen, stollingsfactoren, complementfactoren,…)
Met uitzondering van hormonen en immuunglobulinen worden serumeiwitten aangemaakt
in de lever

2. Bespreking belangrijkste serumeiwitten
2.1. Albumine
55% - 70% van het totaal eiwit
Draagt sterk bij tot de colloïd osmotische druk (COD) van plasma – synthese wordt
geremd indien COD van intravasulair systeem toenoemt door (abnormale) toenamen van
andere eiwitten
Bindt en transporteert positief geladen moleculen (Ca 2+, Mg2+, Cu2+)
Niet polaire bindingsplaatsen voor medicamenten, hormonen, lipiden en bilirubine
Hypoalbuminemie
- Verminderde eiwitopname (malnutritie, malabsorptie)
- Verminderde synthese (leverpathologie, inflammatie)
- Verhoogd katabolisme (weefselbeschadiging,…)
- Verhoogde behoefte (zwangerschap, groei)
- Eiwitverlies in urine, faeces, huid, exsudaat
- Sterk verhoogde synthese van andere eiwitten
