Reflecting on Unit 4 of my study guide, I can see how it has broadened my understanding and
appreciation of novels. Before this module, I had read various genres of novels including crime,
romance, science fiction, and fantasy. One South African novel I have read is "Cry, the Beloved
Country" by Alan Paton. This novel, much like "Small Things" by Nthikeng Mohlele, delves into the
social and emotional landscapes of South Africa, exploring themes of social injustice and personal
redemption. Both novels, though different in narrative style, offer a deep reflection on human
conditions and societal issues.


Unit 4 was particularly enlightening in its exploration of narrative techniques and character
development. The sections that discussed the importance of focalisation and how a character's
thoughts and perceptions shape the reader's understanding were the clearest to me. These
