ATHLETICS
- Refers to track and field events that involve running, jumping or throwing. It comes from the
greek word "athlon" which means "contest".
- The track and field athletics is more of a direct manifestation of the Olympic motto, "Citius, Altius,
Fortius", which means "faster, higher, stronger".
- Track and field events are generally individual sports with athletes challenging each other to
decide a single victory.
HISTORY OF ATHLETICS
- Since the beginning of history, running, jumping, and throwing have been a sporting activities.
- Running was part of military training of the ancient Greeks, Persians, and Romans. Hammer
throw, triple jump, and hurdle races, grew out of the ancient games, fairs, and field days of the
Ireland, England, and Scotland.
- Foot racing, both sprinting and distance running, were widely popular in England. Men and
women would vie to determine who was the fastest, strongest, and most agile.
- According to Deveraturda, et al. (2011), in 1796, the Olympiad marked the introduction of the
metric system into sport. 19th century marked the formal organization of the modern events.
- Athletics was first formally played in 1896 Olympic Games. Only in 1928, Olympics were women
allowed to participate in track and field events.
- An international governing body, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was
established in 1912, and in 2001 it was named as the International Association of Athletics
Federation.
- The Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA) is the governing body of athletics
in the Philippines.
