Lesson: CHARLES LAW

Charles Law
❖ Jacques Charles (1746-1823) replicated the hot-air balloon launched by Joseph and Etienne
Montgolfier on June 4, 1783 in Annonay, France
❖ He used fire to inflate a spherical balloon that was about 30 feet in diameter and traveled about
1.5 miles above earth’s surface before landing.
❖ It states that the volume of a given mass of a gas is directly proportional to its Kelvin
temperature at constant pressure
❖ In mathematical terms, the relationship between temperature and volume is expressed as
➢ V1/T1=V2T2
■ V1 is initial volume
■ V2 is final volume
■ T1 is initial temp
■ T2 is final temp

❖ At a fixed pressure, when a given mass of gas is heated, its volume increases because the particles
move faster and expand
❖ Extrapolating the graph at v=0 gives of 273C
❖ This is called absolute zero the temperature at which the motion of all gas particles has
hypothetically ceased
❖ Sample 1
➢ The volume of a fixed mass of air is 8cm^3 at 27C. Its temperature is raised to 127C
while keeping the pressure constant. Find the volume.
Given:
V1= 8 cm^3
T1= 27*C
V2=?
T2= 127*C
➢ Solution:
V1/T1 = V2 / T2
8 cm^ k = V k
V2= V1(T2)/T1
V2= 8 cm3(400 k)/300 k
V2= 10.6 or 11 cm^3
