Theme: Eating Disorders

TITLE / QUESTION: (100 marks):

a) Provide and differentiate the diagnostic criteria and
hallmark features of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa
and Binge-eating disorder (20)

Diagnostic Criteria and Hallmark Features of Eating Disorders
1. Anorexia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
• A. Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements,
leading to a significantly low body weight in the context of
age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health.
• B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, or persistent
behavior that interferes with weight gain, even though at a
significantly low weight.
• C. Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or
shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape
on self-evaluation, or lack of recognition of the seriousness of
the current low body weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Severe Restriction: Individuals with anorexia nervosa
drastically limit their food intake, often to dangerously low
levels.
• Body Image Distortion: Patients have a distorted perception
of their body size and weight, often seeing themselves as
overweight despite being underweight.

, • Excessive Fear: There is an intense fear of gaining weight,
leading to restrictive eating practices, excessive exercise, or
other behaviors to prevent weight gain.
• Preoccupation with Weight: Individuals often engage in
obsessive thoughts and behaviors related to food, weight, and
body shape.
2. Bulimia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
• A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating, characterized by:
o Eating an excessive amount of food in a discrete period.

o A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.

• B. Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent
weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of
laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or fasting.
• C. The binge eating and compensatory behaviors occur, on
average, at least once a week for three months.
• D. Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and
weight.
• E. The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes
of anorexia nervosa.
Hallmark Features:
• Binge Eating: Episodes involve consuming a large quantity of
food in a short period while feeling a lack of control over
eating.
• Compensatory Behaviors: Individuals frequently use
methods such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or misuse of
medications to counteract the effects of binge eating.
• Shame and Guilt: Patients often feel intense shame or guilt
about their eating behaviors, which can lead to further secrecy
and isolation.
• Fluctuating Weight: Unlike anorexia, individuals with
bulimia nervosa may maintain a normal weight or be slightly
overweight, making the disorder less visible.
