Citizenship Unit 1
Universal declaration of Human Rights
P1:
It was developed after the world war two (1948) to ensure that prisoner of war camps such as the
Holocaust so that they won’t be repeated. It sets out the fundamental human rights to be protected
for every human to make sure that everyone is treated equally. It protects them by everyone is
entitled to their rights and freedom, regardless of their race, colour, sex, language or religion. If
someone feels like their human rights are being breached then they have the choice to go to the
public authority, they can also take it to court. It also protects any citizen if they feel like they are
being forced to work or held for slavery, inhuman treatment such as torture as well as the classic
human rights but overall it gives everyone a basic standard of living.

How effective is it?
It is effective as every being should be treated just as equal as another. Most people to follow the
fact that everyone is equal and on a day to day basis most of the public to follow the Universal
declaration of human rights. It is effective for the army when they are in other countries fighting in
wars, especially if they are captured by the other countries and not treated correctly they have to
follow the universal declaration of human rights law.
How is it ineffective?
The universal declaration of human rights doesn’t work in poor countries because not everyone has
the right to shelter, food, water and clean hygiene as some cannot afford basic standards of living,
therefore they should revise the law and change it for those who don’t or can follow the declaration
of humans rights due to the corruption of the country they belong to.
Geneva Convention
P1:
The Geneva Convention was made for those in the war to be protected when sick, injured or
shipwrecked at sea. It also protects the citizens at the time of the war if they are in the middle of an
armed conflict.
The reason for this law is that when military or war prisoners are protected as well as the wounded
and sick. There is also protection for civilians during a war time or zone. It is mainly in place so that
other countries cannot imprison other soldiers when in a war situation and that civilians will be
protected too, if there is proof of this happening the leader can get into trouble.
Human Rights Act
P1:
It outlines a variety of rights such as freedom of religion, the right to life and privacy, right to
nutrition and water. Everyone is entitled to these rights, regardless of sex, race, colour, language,
religion, national origin, political affiliation or any other status.
Is that everyone is able to live, and survive equally. Therefore, it is a crucial piece of legislation as it is
the rights that everyone lives by, if we didn’t have the Human Rights Act then people would be
treated inhumanely, would be forced to have no food, privacy and no freedom to religion and life.
