Pre-Lab Questions
1. This lab contains two different experiments that cover two different aspects of friction. In
your own words, describe both concepts and how each experiment demonstrates them.
Kinetic friction and static friction are the two types of friction. The force applied to an object to
bring it back to rest after it has been displaced from its starting location is known as static
friction. Some things have enough mass to be so heavy that even manual lifting or pushing is
insufficient to move them because the friction between them and the force pressing against
them is too great. When something is pushed across various surface layers, it encounters
friction that must be overcome. This phenomenon is known as kinetic friction. An object's static
friction can be altered by an incline plane since the steeper the inclination, the less probable it
is that static friction will be able to prevent the object from sliding off. The amount of inclination
an object can tolerate can also be determined by its mass. If not, kinetic friction will arise and
cause the object to slide against the incline.

2. The normal force plays an important role when studying friction. Describe
the relationship between friction and the normal force.
The normal force is always in touch with the item and is applied to the surface perpendicular to
it. The normal force applied to an object on a flat surface is constant and never varies. Gravity
and the surface layer supporting the object cause its direction to alter. Because friction is a force
that exerts pressure when there is motion between two objects, friction can only happen when
an object is in touch with another item. Friction forces an object to move when there is
sufficient force applied between them.
