1.1 Welcome
Welcome to BOT 161 Plant Biology! During this introductory course we will touch on only a few
remarkable aspects of plant life (Basic structure and function, taxonomy and systematics, phytomedicine,
ecology and biotechnology). As a Biologist, plants will, most likely, impact on your future career in some
way or another, no matter what your field of specialisation is. But, whether you regard the course as a
necessity for your future career or not, it is within your grasp to make it an interesting experience by
taking a fresh and unbiased look at these organisms you have taken for granted for so long.
Green plants are the beginning of the food chain and we certainly cannot survive without them.
Apart from survival, think of all the plants and plant products that make life easier and happier for us.
Look at all the wooden objects and structures around you. Are you wearing cotton clothing? Do you
drink tea, coffee or beer, or do you prefer fruit juice? Can you imagine this campus without lawns,
shrubs and trees? Can you imagine life without plants?
1.2 Educational approach
The module consists of two 50-minute online lectures per week. Narrated powerpoint slides will be posted
at least two days before the class. Identify difficult concepts and formulate possible questions and send
them via email or discussion board. Your lecturers will be available during normal scheduled class time, in
different modes, to discuss difficult concepts and answer questions. Participate and ask questions!
1.3 Responsibilities of the student
This might include information about the importance of class attendance and preparation for class.
Encourages student engagement and interaction with content, tutors, peers and lecturers.
