HLTH 1020 WEEK 2 LECTURE 1 – Pelvis: Bones, Features and Joints
- PELVIS
o Function:
▪ Withstand weight bearing and locomotion
▪ Strength and stability > mobility
• “Joints at the back and front move very little. It is built for strength, stability,
and weight-bearing, rather than mobility”
▪ Protect organs of reproduction, digestion, & urination
▪ Is the ‘link’ between trunk and lower limbs
o Structure:
▪ Os Coxae
• fused after puberty
▪ Sacrum = ‘triangular-shaped bone’
• Made of 5 sacral vertebra (fused)
• Medial and between the Ilia
• fused after puberty
▪ Coccyx = inferiorly connected to the sacrum
• Remnants of what used to be a tail
• Amount of coccygeal(?) vertebrae varies between people
o Some people have 2, others have 4 (etc.)
▪ 3 bones make up the “outer lateral part”
• ILIUM = “the most superior bone of the pelvis” (both sides, largest)
o Ilia = plural of Ilium
▪ One on each side of the sacrum
o Iliac crest = most superior ‘ridge’(?) of the ilium
o Posterior superior iliac spines = Immediately deep and medial to the
medial crest ilia crests is 2 spines
▪ “Located deep to the ‘dimples of Venus’”
o Iliac fossa = the large depressions of the ilia
▪ “muscle lays against the iliac fossa”
o Anterior superior iliac spine = the ‘bumps’ more lateral of the pelvis
o Anterior inferior iliac spine = immediately inferior to the ‘anterior
superior iliac spine’
• PUBIS = “medially and anteriorly of the pelvis”
o Two of these bones
• ISCHIUM = “posteriorly and inferiorly of the pelvis”
• Ilium, pubis, and ischium fused after puberty
o “… aren’t going to grow significantly or change in relation to each
other
• Acetabulum = the two lateral ‘sockets’
o Contributed to (fused) by the ilium bone, the pubis bone, and the
ischium bone
• Obturator foramen = the large opening in the bone
