Baseball Basics Questions and Answers
Groundball - answer a bat hit by the batter that hits the ground before it leaves the
infield. Once the ball hits the ground it needs to be fielded and throw to a base for a
"force out" or used to "tag" a player off a base in order to get an out.

Line drive - answer a ball hit hard that leaves the infield without hitting the ground. It
is hit so hard that it seems to be on a straight line- not a looping arch. If it is caught
before it hits the ground it is an out.

Fly Ball - answer a ball hit out of the infield without hitting the ground but one that
has a looping arch trajectory. If it is caught before it hits the ground it is an out.

Pop Fly - answer a ball that is hit very high, nearly straight up in the air. If it is caught
before it hits the ground it is an out.

Double Play - answer When the fielding team gets 2 outs in 1 at bat. The most
common ways for this to happen is to get 2 force outs, or to catch a fly ball and then
throw it back to the base where a player did not TAG UP.

Tagging Up - answer When a hit ball is caught before it hits the ground, the base
runners need to go back to touch the base they started from before they can advance to
the next base. This is called "tagging up". If they do not, the fielding team can get that
runner out by simply touching the base (with the ball) the base runner started from.

Offense - answer when the team bats and tries to score RUNS

Deffense - answer when the team is in the field and is trying to prevent their
opponent from scoring any runs

Runs - answer When teams score in baseball they score a "run"- not points. This is
accomplished when a person crosses HOME PLATE.

Inning - answer An inning is a unit of play in baseball. It consists of each team
getting their "at-bats". When a team gets 3 outs during their "at-bat" then the teams
switch out to the field. Major league games have 9 innings in a regular game. More are
used if the game is tied after 9 innings.

Outs - answer When you are up to bat your team gets to bat until they get 3 "outs".
There are many ways to get out baseball including (but not just): strikeouts, tag outs,
getting a hit ball caught before it hits the ground

Bases - answer there are 4 bases. The base where a player is at bat is called HOME
PLATE (this is also the plate players touch in order to score a run. Once a hit is made
