Abstract

Diabetes is a health condition that occurs in a person when their body is not able to

regulate the amount of glucose in their blood. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 where the

body produces either no insulin or very little insulin and Type 2 where the body is not able to

regulate the insulin. The poor insulin level then allows the glucose in the bloodstream to stay

longer in the body which affects and can damage the blood vessels, the eyes, and multiple other

systems in the body. This study is meant to test the hypothesis that the absorbency rate in people

who are nondiabetic will be lower than in the diabetic people who will have a higher glucose

count. Further research and studies can go in depth with the effects of administering insulin as a

kind of treatment for diabetes. They could also explore the impact of meal composition and

exercise on glucose absorption and the time required for glucose levels to stabilize.

Introduction

In the United States a vast amount of people has diabetes specifically Type 2 due to it

having the possibility to develop and not just being born with it. Typically, the body is able to

regulate glucose levels by maintaining homeostasis and producing insulin to remove any excess

amount of glucose. However, diabetes is a disease in which a person’s body is not able to

regulate the amount of glucose in the bloodstream properly. The glucose then runs through the

bloodstream unchecked and unregulated which can lead to dangerously elevated levels and affect

the blood vessels, the eyes, and multiple other systems in the body and cause damage that could

be irreversible (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022).

, In this study, the hypothesis that is being tested is that the absorbency rates in non-

diabetic people will be lower than diabetic people. This is thought to be due to the diabetic

samples having a higher amount of glucose that need to be absorbed and regulated. The glucose

levels of diabetic and non-diabetic samples will be compared using spectrophotometry.

Methods And Materials

This study was conducted by creating samples of simulated blood that was considered

either from a diabetic or non-diabetic person. Four different samples were created, these samples

were to show a time frame of about 2 hours from 0 minutes which would be just before eating a

meal, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes after eating. The samples would then

be run under a spectrophotometer to measure the blood glucose of the samples which in these

simulations is the amount of light absorbed in each solution. The spectrophotometer is set to a

wavelength of 504nm. Groups were formed and separated based on the fact they either received

a sample of the simulated diabetic blood or non-diabetic blood. The absorbance value of each

sample is then recorded in a table. Then those results are gathered to create an average to

produce the necessary data for this experiment.
