Chapter 7 Radiography Essentials exam
with complete solutions

Contrast: - ANSWER-The difference in radiographic density between adjacent
portions of the image.

Density: - ANSWER-Is the overall blackness or darkness of the radiograph.

Distortion: - ANSWER-Refers to difference between the actual subject and its
radiographic image. Because the subject is three dimensional and the image is
flat (two-dimensional) all radiographic images have some degree of distortion.

Elongation: - ANSWER-Projects the object so it appears longer than it really is.
This occurs when either the IR or the x-ray tube is not correctly aligned with the
part.

Film-screen contact: - ANSWER-When screen contact is poor, recorded detail
decreases. It is also essential to radiographic detail. The integrity of the cassette
and its proper loading should keep the film in uniform tight contact with the two
intensifying screens inside the cassette.

Fog: - ANSWER-Is a general unwanted exposure to the film.

Foreshortening: - ANSWER-Project the part so it appears shorter that it really is.
This usually occurs when the body part is not correctly aligned.

Inverse square law: - ANSWER-That the intensity is inversely proportional to the
square of the distance. It is expressed mathematically as a formula. I/1 = d/ 2
squared over I/2 = D/1 squared.

Involuntary motion: - ANSWER-Involves movements over which the patient has
no control such as tremors, peristalsis and heartbeats.
