The Book Theif
Written in 2006 by the Australian author Markus Zusak, The Book Thief is one of the most famous
historical fiction novels ever. Markus Zusak wrote about the horrors, wickedness, and suffering that
existed in Germany during the Nazi era and especially during the Second World War following the
events of the Holocaust. The narrator is “Death” itself, which makes the plot even more fascinating. This
book profoundly influenced me and has changed how I think about war and tyranny.

The story is set in Germany, during World War 2. The plot revolves around Liesel Meminger, a young,
orphan girl living with foster parents. Throughout the story, Liesel steals books. At first, she does not
even know how to read, but she feels that books are important.

Her foster parents Hans and Rosa are not Jewish, but they disagree with the Nazi regime and privately
fight against it by hiding a Jewish man Max in their basement. Unfortunately, Max was not able to
escape the Nazis, and Liesel watches him being marched through town one day on his way to the
concentration camp. As the war continues, Liesel is given a blank notebook to write her story in, and she
names it The Book Thief.

There are many themes in The Book Thief, including the power of words, and the difference between
kindness and cruelty of humans. Books are an important part of this story, and therefore words hold
great value, with this book, Markus suggests that words are the most powerful force on earth. He even
says that Hitler used words, not guns, to take over the world.

I thoroughly recommend The Book Thief. Although it is quite upsetting and sad in places with a tragic
ending, the plot is still very gripping and thought-provoking.
