LA LITERATURA DE LA EDAD MEDIA1. La sociedad medieval en la literatura
La sociedad medieval se organizaba por estamentos, que desempeñaba cada uno una
función: la de consumir un determinado tipo de literatura.
• Nobleza: lírica culta (poesía amorosa, cortesana, cantada por un trovador). Pretendía
difundir en la corte los valores del amor platónico. Se transmitía de manera escrita para
ser leídos o cantados en forma de verso.
• Clero: mester de clerecía (poesía narrativa de temas religiosos escrita por monjes).
Pretendía moralizar y adoctrinar a la población en valores cristianos. Se transmitía de
manera escrita para ser leídos o recitados en forma de verso.
• Pueblo llano: mester de juglaría (poesía lírica tradicional y poesía época narrativa de
temas guerreros). Pretendía expresar sentimientos y exaltar los valores de la sociedad
guerrera. Se transmitía de manera oral en forma de verso.
◦ Era de transmisión oral porque la mayoría de la población no sabía leer. Los autores
hacían llamadas a los oyentes para mantener su atención y daban importancia al
ritmo.
◦ Las canciones y leyendas eran elaboradas por autores individuales cuyos nombres
desconocemos, de ahí su carácter anónimo. Por su transmisión oral, las obras
experimentan modificaciones y por eso se consideran de autoría colectiva.
2. Poesía épica: el mester de juglaría (siglo XII)
Se conoce como mester de juglaría (u oficio de juglares) a una corriente literaria de la
Edad Media que producía poemas narrativos sobre héroes épicos, que se transmitían de
manera anónima y oral.
Su función era:
• Entretener: mediante espectáculos y recitación de relatos en verso sobre heroicos
guerreros (conocidos como cantares de gesta).
• Informar: con datos históricos y geográficos sobre hechos bélicos. Por ello, los cantares
de gestas son realistas.

• Memorizar y recitar extensos poemas épicos con ayuda de algún instrumento. •
