Body Tubes
- There are 7 types of Body Tubes:

(1) - NG Tube:

- Indications:

- Diagnostic indications for NG intubation include the following:

1. Evaluation of upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (i.e, presence, volume).

2. Aspiration of gastric fluid content.

3. Identification of the esophagus and stomach on a chest radiograph.

4. Administration of radiographic contrast to the GI tract.

- Therapeutic indications for NG intubation include the following:

1. Gastric decompression, including maintenance of a decompressed state after endotracheal
intubation, often via the oropharynx.

2. Relief of symptoms and bowel rest in the setting of small-bowel obstruction.

3. Aspiration of gastric content from recent ingestion of toxic material.

4. Administration of medication.

5. Feeding.

- Contraindications:

- Absolute contraindications for NG intubation include the following:

1. Severe midface trauma.

2. Recent nasal surgery.

- Relative contraindications for NG intubation include the following:

1. Coagulation abnormality.

, 2. Esophageal varices (usually, a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube is introduced, but an NG tube can
be used for lower-grade varices) or stricture.

3. Recent banding of esophageal varices.

4. Alkaline ingestion (the tube may be kept if the injury is not severe).

(2) - Tracheostomy Tube:

- Indications:

- General indications include the following:

1. Congenital anomaly (eg, laryngeal hypoplasia, vascular web).

2. Upper airway foreign body that cannot be dislodged with Heimlich and basic cardiac life
support maneuvers.

3. Supraglottic or glottic pathologic condition (eg, infection, neoplasm, bilateral vocal cord
paralysis).

4. Neck trauma that results in severe injury to the thyroid or cricoid cartilages, hyoid bone, or
great vessels.

5. Subcutaneous emphysema.

- Contraindications:

- No absolute contraindications exist for tracheostomy. A strong relative contraindication to
discrete surgical access to the airway is the anticipation that the blockage is a laryngeal
carcinoma.

(3) - Proctoscope:

- Indications:

1. Anitis – covers various inflammatory diseases in the anal area, often also in connection with
haemorrhoids.

2. Hemorrhoidal disorders.

3. Cryptitis.

4. Papillitis.

5. Proctitis.
