deceive protect or neutralize, espionage, intelligence collection, sabotage,
sedition, subversion, assassination, and terrorist activities, conducted for or
on behalf of foreign powers, organizations persons, or their agents, or
international terrorists organizations or activities directed against U.S.
national security interests or DoD and its personnel, information, materiel,
facilities, and activities
-Counter Intelligence Strategy - --two pronged approach as part of a
comprehensive CI strategy that feeds more effective CI functions
Offensive: activities can include exploitation, penetration, degradation,
disruption, deception, and neutralization
Defensive: activities can include detection, identification, and assessment,
protection and other countering activities
-Counterintelligence Activity Functions - -counterintelligence activities
encompass five functions:
1) collection
2) analysis
3) production of intelligence
, 4) investigation; which include the detection, identification, exploitation,
and/or neutralization of adversary intelligence threats directed against the
US
5) Functional Services- activities that support other intelligence or DoD
operations by providing specialized defensive CI services such as red
teaming, or threat vulnerability assessments also known as TVAs.

-Counterintelligence Missions: Countering Espionage - --countering
espionage, international terrorism, and the CI insider threat
-tie into counterintelligence investigations using both offensive and
defensive activities
-Counterintelligence Missions: Support to Force Protection - --includes
performing functional services primarily in a defensive posture and in direct
support to operations and military units performing operations
-Counterintelligence Missions: Support to Critical Infrastructure - --includes
systems and assets, whether physical or virtual, so vital to the United States
that the incapacity or destruction of such systems and assets would have a
debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public
health or safety, or any combination of those matters
-Counterintelligence Missions: Analytic and Operational Support - --support
to research, development, and acquisition; this includes both analytic as well
as operational support to R&D and acquisition efforts within the DoD
-Counterintelligence Coordination - --counterintelligence activities have
different coordination requirements depending on where they are conducted
-inside the US and outside the US
-Counter Intelligence Coordination Requirements within the US - --
coordination is conducted between the US attorney general and the
secretary of defense in accordance with a previous memorandum of
agreement
-Counter Intelligence Coordination Requirements outside the US - --
activities conducted outside of the US are coordinated in accordance with
Annex 3 to the memorandum of agreement between the Central Intelligence
