The Army alpha - Answer-Literate recruits would be given this.
Written test
Included 8 parts, took less than an hour and could be given to large groups.
Most of the items in the test comprised such tasks as filling in the next number in a
sequence, unscrambling sentences and analogies.

The Army beta - Answer-Illiterates and those that fail the Alpha would be given this. If
you failed the Beta you would be called back for an individual examination.

Never actually done

Problems with Army alpha design - Answer-Yerkes claimed to be testing native
intellectual ability but included whole section that assumed familiarity within American
culture so culturally biased.

Problems with Army Beta design - Answer-Still requires pencil work and knowledge of
numbers and how to write them and many men had never held a pencil before and so
we're disadvantaged.

How Yerkes' mental tests were supposed to be administered - Answer-Army alpha was
supposed to be for literate men.
Army Beta was supposed to be for the illiterate men and those who failed the alpha test.
Individual examinations were supposed to be done on those who failed the Beta test.

Problems with the way Yerke's mental tests were administered - Answer-Due to time
constraints, individual exams did not happen.
There were more illiterate men than expected. Many should have done the Beta test but
this became bottle-necked so they did Alpha and scored 0.
Standards required to take alpha test were lowered but not consistent through camps.

Yerke's findings - Answer-Fact 1: Average mental age of a white American adult (13)
was just above that of a moron.
Fact 2: It was possible to grade European immigrants by their county of origin. The
darker people of Southern Europe and the Slavs of Eastern Europe were less intelligent
than the people of Western and Northern Europe.
