ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY = field of psychological study that deals with mental, emotional and behavioral
problems.

DEVIATION FROM SOCIAL NORMS = behaviour that is different from what is expected in society.

SOCIAL NORMS are unwritten rules of standards of behaviours that are considered [‘acceptable’ and what is
‘deviant in society’. ] They are also culturally specific and change over time.

Mentally abnormal people don’t fit within the norms of society (at that time).

EXAMPLE - Antisocial personality disorder

One symptom of APD is ‘absence of prosocial internal standards associated with failure to conform to lawful and
culturally normative ethical behaviour’. Goes against social norms = considered mentally abnormal.
