Chapter 8 Eat and Sleep Disorders
Summarized Notes for Exam
Athabasca University.
, Chapter 8 – Eating and Sleep-Wake Disorders
Major Types of Eating Disorders
➢ anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
o both involve severe disruptions in eating behaviour
o both involve extreme fear and apprehension about gaining weight
➢ binge-eating disorder
o concerns about body shape and weight are similar to that seen in anorexia and bulimia
➢ THE MAIN DIFFERENCE is there are no compensatory behaviours
Eating Disorders
➢ other DSM 5 eating disorders
o rumination disorder
o pica (eating stuff that’s not food…)
o avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
▪ kids who don’t eat enough food and they do not grow at the right rate
Bulimia Nervosa
➢ binge-eating is a primary characteristic
o binge = eating excess amounts of food
o binge eating is perceived as uncontrollable
o qualitatively different from overeating
➢ compensatory behaviours
o purging = self-induced vomiting, diuretics, laxatives
o some may exercise excessively; others fast
➢ self evaluation unduly influenced by body shape and weight
People who are anorexic get a lot of satisfaction + pride from really restricting their food intake. If a lot of your
self-worth is tied up in your ability to restrict your food intake, your self-worth is going to be garbage after a
while, because you cannot not overeat (you’re up against biology)
Bulimia Nervosa
➢ purging methods can result in severe medical problems
o salivary gland enlargement
o erosion of dental enamel
o electrolyte imbalance
▪ you need sodium and potassium for nerves to do their work. You’ll end up with cardiac
problems. This can be medically dangerous
▪ paradoxically you will get an increase in body fat
o increased body fat
o intestinal problems from laxative overuse
▪ chronic constipation and other problems
o callouses on hands and fingers
Bulimia Nervosa
➢ comorbidity with other psychological disorders is common
o anxiety: GAD, social phobia
o mood disorders
o borderline personality disorder
