, In the Leeds City Council, we are developing a project in relation to employee’s job satisfaction. We
would really appreciate if all employees would reflect on their thoughts and opinions about their
jobs. Any response would contribute to the process.
All we need, is you to participate in our questionnaire and honestly answer the questions. All of the
answers will remain private and confidential. The data will be used in order to analyse the factors
that directly affect job satisfaction and ways to improve it. Therefore, providing us with accurate
responses will help us to tackle the main issue.
This survey should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete, so sharing the best ideas in
relation to job satisfaction would highly increase our chances of improvement. The survey results
will be shared with the relevant department. In the meantime, keep an eye on our newsletter for
any updates.
In terms of demographic variables, we will focus our research on age, income, and job tenure; to
check how they can influence our study variables: job satisfaction, employee retention and pay
satisfaction. There are some hypotheses which we would like to interconnect with this research. For
example, knowing the age of the employees would help us to understand if there is any significant
age gap between superiors and subordinates that may influence turnover. With that being said, a
hypothesis states that “the age gap between older workers and younger supervisors is linked to the
frequency of emotions such as “anger, fear, and disgust” among employees, (p< 0.01) (r= 0.724),
Naveed Anwar (2012)”. This highlights the fact that the age difference between superior/inferior
might be the factor that makes employees dislike their jobs.
Income will show us the pay rate within the organization and whether they believe that their salary
is appropriate to the load of work they do. There is a hypothesis which suggests that “pay level is
positively correlated with both overall job satisfaction ( ρ̂= .15, p<.05) and with pay satisfaction ( ρ̂
=.24, p<.05), Timothy A. Judge, et al (2010)”. Thereof that, we would like to implement this
assumption into our research to see if there is any correlation with our issue.
Job tenure will show the precise number of employees in each department which would help us to
analyse what department is the least retaining for the employees. A hypothesis states that “jobs in
professional occupations will have higher levels of knowledge characteristics and autonomy than
jobs in nonprofessional occupations, t (239) = 4.37, r 2 =.07, p< .001, (as for the task complexity),
Morgeson, F. P., & Humphrey, S. E. (2005)”. Such assumption will help us identify if that is really the
reason why there is high level of staff absenteeism and turnover.
When selecting measures for the variables it is important to implement the right level of
measurement, but also follow the rules of writing questionnaire items. Selecting the right data is
crucial for the research as not all of measures provide the same analysis.
There is also a set of rules for writing questionnaire items. “In questionnaires, ‘items’ refer to
questions, statements, or tasks that participants respond to”, Foster and Parker (1995). In order to
not mislead or confuse participants, it is important to structure those ‘items’ appropriately and
remain within the criteria. For example, combination items, negatives, leading and loaded questions,
ambiguous items, jargon, or technical terms would be the main things to avoid when writing
questionnaires.
In the introduction I would firstly introduce myself and the project we are pursuing in. Then state
what is our goal and why are we collecting this data. It is important to mention how long will it take
