Introduction
In this report I will be assessing the social implications of business ethics facing Sports
Direct, in addition to identifying the negative consequences that affect employees and
customers both in-store and online.
Human Resource Management
Human resource management concerns the
management of people in a business or organisation
so the business runs smoothly and they are able to
successfully work together to achieve their goals.
Ethics in human resource management can include
discrimination, worker surveillance, privacy issues
and zero hour contracts.
Discrimination is treating a person or group of
people differently, specifically in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people,
as a result of their race, sex, disability, gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation or
religious beliefs. Discrimination is of concern to Sports Direct, due to the fact that if the
brand is seen to be discriminating against a group of people it could damage the brands
image. Furthermore, this could deter customers from purchasing products from Sports
Direct in the future. For example, if it became known to the public that during the
recruitment process Asians were being discriminated against. Not only I this most likely to
result in a large number of Asians boycotting Sports Direct, other members of the public
could also avoid shopping at the business in support of the Ethics act 2010.
A negative consequence to employees is if an employee feels they are being discriminated
against at work it could have a negative impact on their work. For example, if a female
employee at Sports Direct feels they are being given simple tasks or being passed up on a
promotion to their male counterpart. This can result in the employee lacking interest at
work, furthermore the employee work could become
lacklustre as a result of them feeling a lack of
appreciation at work.
When discrimination is seen to be prominent in stores
such as Sports Direct, it can result in negative
consequence to customers. An example of this is when
the ethnicity of the employees in store does not reflect
that of society. In England, especially London society is
very multicultural, therefore customers would like to see this reflected in the ethnicity of
the employees working in Sports Direct stores. Many consumers could potentially feel
uncomfortable shopping in a store where there is only one type of ethnicity displayed
among the workers.
