ASSIGNMENT 1 – 19 JULY 2019
A New Religious Movement is difficult to define. The word “new” can mean something that has not
been seen or done before. However, this is not the definite case with the definition of New Religious
Movement. That is why the definition for New Religious Movement is very broad in its definition, as
not all Religious Movement are new in their modern explanations. A New Religious Movement can
be regarded as a social movement or faith that is based on or supports a religion or spirituality that’s
practices, or ideologies are considered new or different from any other religious movement that has
been in practice and is now on the rise. It can be classified further into a category of social systems
that’s message or aim can be perceive as to change or prevent the change in a system weather that
be social, religious or spiritual which uses chosen principals or factors from different groups, such as
symbols, rituals and ideologies in their practices or teachings. Usually lead by a charismatic leader
and who promotes a certain set of values under a belief system. New Religious movements mostly
either promote individualism or communal life.
