ASSIGNMENT 09 - 13 September

According to Wikipedia “Millenarianism is the belief by a religious, social, or political group or
movement in a coming fundamental transformation of society, after which "all things will be
changed”. Millenarianism exists in various cultures and religions worldwide, with various
interpretations of what constitutes a transformation.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenarianism

“These movements believe in radical changes to society after [or utilizing] a major cataclysm or
transformative event” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millenarianism

Current millenarian movements believe that the current rulers and state of society is full of
corruption and injustice. Millenarian movements believe force must be used to destroy oppressive
standards and government.

Meaning that movement that is regarded as Millenarian are somewhat hostile and aggressive in
their approach to change. Millenarian movements are so convicted and dedicated to their beliefs,
they believe it is acceptable to disobey any conventional rules of acceptable behaviour. This
disobedience for faith can be very dangerous, the movement can then begin using violence as a
method to demonstrate their faith and this can be detrimental for members and others who do not
support their ideas.

The above description fits that of the NRM Boko Haram. The Boko Haram advocates the Jihad. Jihad
is in a sense an armed struggle for the Muslim religion. The struggle was started by Usman Dan Fodio
protesting in the 19th century and led to the removal of Haber rulers who were replaced by religious
scholars. Since then, political action has become preconditioned among Muslims in Nigeria. The
education in Islam Law became common in debates. When Western education was introduced, by
the British colonial textbooks symbolised the colonial rule of the British. Muslim reforms tried to
develop programmes to Islamise modernity. Westernization was alien, colonial, Christian, materialist
and corruption. Thus, began the protest of modern Islam. The strategy was to appear weak as a
facade for the westernization of Islam.

In Nigeria “Boko Haram have made impressive territorial gains with Islamic State forces encircling
Baghdad and Boko Haram’s wave of violence sharply escalating across Nigeria.”

Reason for these unsolicited attacks is the fact that Boko Harmen just does not agree with the
colonial border created by French and British in and along Nigeria, because “Boko Haram literature
rejects the territorial and political configuration of the Nigerian state and has terrorized Christian
villages along the Cameroon border.”
