With reference to these sources and your understanding of
the historical context. Assess the value of these sources in
explaining the effectiveness of Heath as a political leader?

The main value of source two lies in its content. It omits balance and a
fair attitude towards Heath as a Prime Minister. The language is
mostly positive, with Critchley stating that Heath was ‘warm and
friendly’ but also noting that his friends did not include Tory
backbenchers, revealing this balance in suggesting there was a slight
lack of unity but he was by no means cold or unfriendly. He also
expressed that he was ‘highly competent’, suggesting Heath was
capable but perhaps unlucky. We know that this could be true
considering the poor economy he inherited from Wilson and previous
strained relations between trade unions and the government. This
balance is valuable as it doesn’t feel like Critchley is favouring or
discrediting Heath one way or another, and so this presents itself as

especially close with Heath. Therefore, he would not have the best,
exclusively first hand knowledge to make as an accurate observation
of his premiership. This lack of truly insightful knowledge is furthered
by the fact that this autobiography was published in 1994 - twenty
years post Heath’s last year as Prime Minister. During this time,
Critchley would have served under Margaret Thatcher as a
backbencher years prior, and so he may have been more inclined to
