Note that you are not allowed to receive help from anybody or assist anybody else when you
complete this examination. Also note that when you are logged on all activities are recorded
on a server at Unisa. This means we can see exactly when you log on and off, the questions
you respond to, the time you use per question etc. During and after the examination students’
response patterns and responses may be subjected to integrity testing. If any irregularities are
found your examination paper may be nullified. Examination fraud is viewed in an extremely
serious light, and may result in your being refused reregistration as a student.
YOU MUST RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTION
1 TURN OVER
,Question 1
I declare that I am not receiving help form anybody, nor am I assisting anybody else in
completing this examination. I understand that my submitted responses may be subjected to
integrity testing and that my paper may be nullified should any irregularities be found.
1. True
2. False
NOTE: If your paper does not contain a “True” response to this question, your examination
will be nullified.
The research consultation company …
You own a consultation company specialising in psychological research. The company
is called PsyConsult. You employ a number of social scientists and professional
psychologists, but there are also students (psychological interns) who do their practical
at the company.
Meeting the client …
Joan Machocho contacted you to ask whether your company would be prepared to
assist them with a new project. Joan is the director of lending services at a South African
commercial bank.
In the first meeting Joan explains that lending money to clients is a high risk business.
Although clients are required to present the bank with a complete set of certified
documents fraud is a constant risk. Therefore, clients applying for a loan exceeding half
a million rand are interviewed in person. Structured interviews are used, but there is
anecdotal evidence that some interviewers are able to identify fraudulent clients
intuitively. Therefore, the bank bought a training programme aimed at improving
interviewer skills, in particular an interviewer’s ability to identify clients that may be
deceitful. A major part of the programme is a workshop aimed at improving perceptual
attention efficiency. Some of the content of the training workshop needs to be replaced
by South African content. The bank needs PsyConsult to adapt the training workshop
for the South African context and to research the validity of the adapted workshop.
Joan provides you with the relevant course material as well research articles concerning
the programme and the theory it is based on.
At the research consultation company …
At PsyConsult each day begins with a morning meeting to discuss the business of the
day. The meeting is attended by the social scientists and psychologists working for the
company as well as psychology interns. At this morning’s meeting you inform everybody
about you meeting with Joan and the bank’s project, and open the matter for discussion.
You pay close attention to what everybody says because the purpose of the discussion
is to sort out the details of the project. In order to guide the discussion, you have to
indicate who you agree with most, who you agree with second most and who you agree
with least.
2 TURN OVER
,Thus suppose Brenda, Kristel and Thomas respond to a point under discussion. If you
agree most with Kristel’s response, second most with Brenda’s response and least with
Thomas your choice is: Kristel, Brenda, Thomas.
You select your choice from a list of five potential responses. For example, if the list is:
1. Thomas, Brenda, Kristel
2. Thomas, Kristel, Brenda
3. Brenda, Thomas, Kristel
4. Kristel, Brenda, Thomas
5. Kristel, Thomas, Brenda
You select 4.
If your choice does not appear in the list, you have to reconsider your choice.
Discussing the client’s problem ….
You conclude your introduction of the project as follows: The crux of the matter is we
have to assess the validity and impact of the training programme. I asked Kristel to
formulate a broad outline of what we need to do. Over to you Kristel.
Kristel: There are several issues we have to pay attention to. Quite clearly we want to
see whether the training has any impact on the loan interviewers who participate in the
training programme. The main component of the training programme is an Enhanced
Perception Workshop (EPW). The idea behind this is that training in enhanced
perception could help interviewers to observe more accurately the facial expressions of
those they interview. Facial expressions involve numerous muscles. Some of these
muscles are tiny, controlling micro aspects of an expression. Because people cannot
fully control these micro expressions they expose a person’s true intentions. Although
micro expressions are barely perceptible interviewers who are trained how to pay close
attention to facial expressions may perceive them subconsciously. Such subconscious
perceptions lead to an intuitive grasp of the other person’s true intentions. Thus the need
for the enhanced perception workshop.
What we are required to do is firstly to replace some of the workshop content with South
African material to establish the South African Enhanced Perception Workshop (SA-
EPW). For example, material related to facial expressions needs to be replaced with
material obtained from typical South African faces. Secondly, we have to see whether
the workshop still works after the adaption of its content, and thirdly we have to
determine whether the workshop has the desired impact on behaviour, which is
increased accuracy of interpersonal intuition. The original course material bought by the
bank includes a test called the Quality of Facial Expression Test (QFET), which can be
used to asses whether the enhanced perception workshop has the desired impact on
behaviour. This is based on the assumption explained above, namely that subliminal
perception of micro expressions adds to one’s ability to identify facial expressions
correctly. In other words, interviewers should obtain higher QFET scores after
completing the enhanced perception workshop. I have to add that the relationship
between correct recognition of facial expressions and intuitive grasp of intentions has
been well established in research.
You: The workshop manual indicates that the enhanced perception workshop is based
on perceptual attention theory. According to this theory perceptual attention involves
three factors, namely how people scan the field of perception, how familiar they are with
the perceptual field and how quickly their perceptions come to awareness. People tend
to follow a particular pattern in scanning the field of perception (e.g. another person’s
face), but all scanning patterns are not optimally efficient. Perceptual efficiency also
increases if the perceiver knows what to pay attention to (familiarity with the field of

, perception). The third factor refers to the time interval between the perception and
awareness of the perception – in other words, how quickly the perceiver becomes aware
of the perception.
Question 2
Brenda: It seems to me the primary focus of the South African commercial bank is the
purchasing of the Enhanced Perception Workshop and implementation of the South
African Enhanced Perception Workshop, but what is the purpose of the Enhanced
Perception Workshop?
Thomas: Well the purpose of the Enhanced Perception Workshop clearly is to improve
perceptual attention efficiency
Lebo: Actually, the purpose of the Enhanced Perception Workshop is to improve subliminal
perceptions
Kristel: No, the Enhanced Perception Workshop’s purpose is to improve accuracy of loan
approvals
You agree most with, second most with and least with:
1. Thomas Kristel Lebo
2. Kristel Lebo Thomas
3. Lebo Kristel Thomas
4. Thomas Lebo Kristel
5. Kristel Thomas Lebo
Question 3
Lebo: Do you think the South African Enhanced Perception Workshop is fit for purpose in
light of the intention of the South African commercial bank?
Brenda: I think the South African Enhanced Perception Workshop is fit for purpose because
there is a relationship between improved perceptual attention efficiency and the ability
to perceive micro expressions
Kristel: Yes, it is fit for purpose because the intention of the South African commercial bank
is to improve the accuracy of interviewers’ interpersonal intuition; and the intention of
South African Enhanced Perception Workshop is to improve perceptual attention
efficiency
Thomas: No, I do not think it is fit for purpose because the intention of the South African
Enhanced Perception Workshop is to improve the accuracy of interviewers’
interpersonal intuition, which does not address risk of lending money to deceitful
clients
You agree most with, second most with and least with:
1. Thomas Kristel Brenda
2. Brenda Kristel Thomas
3. Kristel Thomas Brenda
4. Kristel Brenda Thomas
5. Brenda Thomas Kristel
