These are my answers that I used to achieve a 94/100 raw marks on the Year 12 Unit 1 Criminology controlled assessment which then resulted in me getting 100/100 UMS marks. When completing my controlled assessment, these answers were the structure I used however I changed it according to the brief. ...

AC1.2 Explain why two crimes from the brief may go
unreported?
Example Answer 1

One personal reason why hate crime is not reported is because of embarrassment. People
are often embarrassed that they’ve been a victim due to one of the labelled characteristics
and they don’t want to report the crime because they’re fearful of what other people would
say about them. One social and cultural reason why people may not report the crime is
because of lack of knowledge. Hate crimes in the UK wouldn’t be seen as hate crimes in
other countries such as Saudi Arabia. There is different legislation in other countries which
means something offensive in the UK may not be offensive elsewhere because they don’t
have the Equality Act 2010. People won't report it because they think it’s normal and not as
much of a big deal as others make it out to be.

Another example of unreported crime from the brief includes technological crime.
Technological crime is often committed by the use of computer. One personal reason why
people may not report technological crime is because of disinterest. Technological crime can
happen in many different forms. An example of this can be spam emails. When people
receive spam emails, they often just ignore it even though it is a crime. People just don’t
care enough about it to report it because it’s seen as a minor thing. One social and cultural
reason why people don’t report technological crime is because of complexity. Due to the
complexity some people go through to hide their tracks, it is very difficult to find the
offender. People think it’s pointless if they report it because they won't be able to trace the
offender hence why people don’t report technological crime.

Example Answer 2
One personal reason why people may not report moral crime is because of disinterest. Some
crimes e.g drugs use or prostitution are seen as victimless crimes so therefore people won’t
report this because it doesn’t bother them personally hence why there’s a low level of
crime. One social and cultural reason why people might not report moral crime is because of
lack knowledge. People aren’t educated on every crime or illegal act. An example can be
vagrancy because everyone sees people begging for money but they don’t feel the need to
report it because they feel sympathy for them.

One personal reason why someone may not report honour based crime is because of fear.
People are fearful to report honour crimes because of the consequences that may occur. The
offender may get off lightly or perhaps have no conviction which will make it worse for the
victim because there is an underlying fear that the offender will commit more crimes against
them. One social & cultural reason why someone may not report honour based crimes is
because of culture bound crime. This can impact level of reporting in the community
because people don’t feel the need to report these crimes as they wouldn’t want to get
involved in other people’s family business.
