The Skeletal System


֎ -:- The skeletal system is made up of bones and cartilage. Every bone contains

each of the four types of tissue: epithelial (blood vessels), nervous, connective

(blood, bone, cartilage) and muscle (within the blood vessels). This means that

each bone is considered an organ.




Protection


֎ -:- some bones physically surround internal body organs, such as cranial bones

around the brain and the rib cage around the heart and lungs. The hard quality

of bone protects the underlying organs from damage.




Movement


֎ -:- Bones provide a place of attachment for skeletal muscles, and they act as

levers, enabling coordinated movement to occur.




Blood Cell Formation


֎ -:- Blood cells are formed by a connective tissue called red marrow that is

found within certain bone tissues.

Storage


֎ -:- Bones store calcium and phosphate, which are needed for muscle

contraction and nerve cell function. The yellow marrow found in bones can

also serve as energy storage, because the main components of yellow marrow

are lipids (fats).




Bone Tissue


֎ -:- Bone tissue can be divided into two groups: compact bone and spongy

bone.

֎ -:- Compact bone is made up of tightly packed bone cell units called osteons.

These units make bones hard and rigid. Compact bone is usually found along

the shaft of long bones and covering the outside surfaces of most other bones.

֎ -:- Compact bone has circular units of dense calcified matrix called lamellae.

Canaliculi


֎ -:- Small canals, canaliculi, go through the matrix carrying blood vessels that

provide nutrients to the osteocytes from the central or haversian canal.




Spongy bone


֎ -:- Spongy bone has thin plates of bone called trabeculae that interconnect

with one another and have spaces left in between. The spaces are filled with

red marrow where blood cells are made.

Spongy bone also has osteocytes deposited in lacunae, but there is no series of canals

because osteocytes receive nourishment from the rich blood supply in the marrow.




Types of Bones


֎ -:- Long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones and Sesamoid.




Long bone


֎ -:- Long bones are greater in length than width, with a narrow shaft between

two widened ends. Long bones are designed to absorb stress from body

weight, and provide strength and mobility. These bones contain yellow and

red bone marrow.

֎ -:- Short bones are cube-like with length, width and height measurements all

about the same. Short bones usually consist of spongy bone surrounded by a

thin layer of compact bone




Flat bone


֎ -:- Flat bones have broad surfaces for protection of organs and attachment of

muscles (ex. ribs, cranial bones, and bones of the shoulder girdle).




Irregular bone


֎ -:- Bones that are not flat, short or long bones are classified as irregular bones.

They are primarily made of spongy bone that is covered with a thin layer of

compact bone. Irregular bones are defined as any of a group of bones having

peculiar or complex forms.




Sesamoid


֎ -:- Sesamoid, or round bones, such as the kneecap, are found embedded

within connective tissues.
