Functies skelet: vorm, bescherming, aanhechting voor spieren, bloedaanmaak en calcium voorraad
Beweging is mogelijk in de gewrichten tussen de botten
Micro-organismen: plant, dier, mens
Meercellige (specialisatie van cellen)

In de dierenwereld zie je bij meercellige een vorm van skelet ontstaan:
Functies: bescherming en vormbehoud
Steunapparaten
Weekdieren en inktvissen-> ongewervelden maar toch met een extern steunapparaat
Insecten, kreeften, krabben -> geavanceerde maar toch nog extern steunapparaat. Ze hebben chitine platen aan de buitenzijde,
net zoals bij een harnas. Oftewel geleedpotigen.
Gewervelde dieren: vissen, reptielen, vogels en zoogdieren-> inwendig skelet
Bijbehorende cellen en weefsels
Cellen vormen weefsel. In dat weefsel zit tussenweefselstof die vaak eigenschappen van het weefsel bepaalt.
Extracellulaire stoffen worden door cellen geproduceerd:
- Bindweefselcellen
- Botcellen
Bot is levend dynamisch weefsel: er vindt continu afbraak en opbouw plaats, daarmee past het bot zich aan de belasting aan.
3 soorten:
Osteoblasten: bot aanmakers
Osteocyten: zijn de rijpe niet meer delende onderhoudscellen
Osteoclasten: botafbrekers
