Biologen gebruiken 3 criteria om individuen tot soorten te rangschikken:
Uiterlijke kenmerken.
Vruchtbare nakomelingen.
DNA-onderzoek.
Als 2 verschillende soorten samen voortplanten, ontstaat er een hybride organisme. Een hybride is
vrijwel altijd onvruchtbaar. Organismen met ongeslachtelijke voortplanting tellen niet mee.
De naam van een soort bestaat uit de geslachtsnaam (met een hoofdletter) en de soortaanduiding
(zonder hoofdletter). Dat is de binominale naamgeving. Soms staat er nog wat achter, dat is dan de
ondersoort of de naam/eerste letter van de persoon die het heeft beschreven. Een ondersoort is
meestal een geografisch afgescheiden groep soortgenoten met iets afwijkende kenmerken.
(BiNaS: 92A) Taxonomie is de wetenschap die organismen indeelt in steeds grotere groepen. Rassen
zijn geen onderdeel van de taxonomie. Organismen -> Soorten -> Geslachten -> Families -> Orden ->
Klassen -> Afdelingen -> Rijken -> Domeinen.
De domeinen is de grootste groep. Deze bestaat uit archae, bacteriën en eukaryoten. Archae,
bacteriën en eukaryoten worden onderscheidt op microniveau.
