Examples of operating systems Answer: All different windows operating systems, OS(Apple),
UNIX(what MAC OS, LINUX, and Solaris(Sun Micro systems) were based upon). UNIX was used on many
larger systems.
First generation of operating systems Answer: (1945-1955). Programmers would have to schedule
time to run their single program through the computer. They would feed their program into it and the
output would come out on tape. If they made a mistake, they would need to revise their program and
schedule another block to retry their program.
Second generation of operating systems Answer: (1955-1965). Batch operating system
implemented. The computer could now run a BATCH of programs at once, though only one program
would ever be loaded into memory at any one time. The computer would print out the result on tape,
and that tape would be brought to a small i/o computer that would read them, separate them, and print
them out. The batch system was ultimately inefficient because it could only actively work on one
program at a time.
Third generation of operating systems Answer: (1965-1985). This period saw the advent of
interactive processing, also known as real time processing, which meant that computers could be fast
enough so that the user could interact with the computer. Time sharing was necessary because multiple
users had to be served simultaneously.
Multiprogramming Answer: Doing more than one thing "simultaneously" in order to speed up
processing. It is not really simultaneous because it is really just quickly switching tasks. In this scenario

systems in appliances and other things such as cars, microwaves, ovens, etc which enhance their
performances.
Fifth generation of operating systems Answer: (future). Interface will be not only with text and
graphics but with touch, photography, sounds, etc. Parallel processing and distributive systems are an
important component of this generation.
Parallel processing Answer: Hundreds or thousands of processors may be connected to form a
network on which data may reside and all of the processors may be used to compute/process the data
thus increase the speed at which a result could be obtained. Here, the programmer and hence the user
will have some clue as to which computer has the data.
Distributed systems Answer: The same idea as parallel processing holds true but now the user
doesn't care which of the computer has the data, so long as the data is obtained to carry out the task. In
other words, it is looking for an "answer", and it doesn't matter who comes up with it.
